　　东崖寺的大钟，重两千多斤，高丈余。每天清晨，古钟敲响，和尚便随着钟声开始早课。

　　随着寺庙划入旅游区后，“东崖晨钟”成了此地一景，很多游客都慕名前来。

　　可惜的是，寺里的和尚青黄不接，钟声渐渐不如以前响亮，有时还会迟响个两三分钟。

　　为此，佛教协会特意给东崖寺派来了一个刚从佛学院毕业的新僧，专门跟老和尚学撞钟。

　　新僧年轻英俊，学问好，做事也非常勤勉，老和尚对这个弟子很是满意。

　　从第二天开始，新僧就早早起床，开始敲钟了。古钟沾上了青春的汗水，顿时充满了生气，东崖寺也仿佛年轻了不少。

　　寺庙里的仪式是晨钟暮鼓。因此到了傍晚，新僧又要打起精神，再到鼓楼敲鼓。

　　看见徒弟如此不辞辛苦，老和尚心里生出满腔怜爱之情，心想：倘若肯把撞钟击鼓的热情用来诵经念佛，将来一定能修成一个大法师。

　　老和尚试着跟徒弟探讨起佛教的经卷，新僧对答如流，很有心得。

　　老和尚连连点头：说道“你要好好修行，将来的前程一定在撞钟之上啊”。

　　新僧微笑着说：“师傅，名利二字对我们出家人并不存在，何必又要去追求那撞钟之上的前程呢？”老和尚张了张嘴，避开了弟子的眼光。
