《Tender is the Night》读后感(一):notes
《Tender is the Night》读后感(二):Miles and miles of rolling night
Dick 尽管曾纯粹的追求智性却也逐渐意识到自己和大多数人一样,有的只不过是几个想法而不是真正的智慧: “Like so many men he had found that he had only one or two ideas—that his little collection of pamphlets now in its fiftieth German edition contained the germ of all he would ever think or know.” Yet he had been swallowed up like a gigolo, and somehow permitted his arsenal to be locked up in the Warren safety-deposit vaults." 种种因素似乎都在指向 Dick 的下坠,但 Dick 真的无能为力么,Fitz 没有给出解释似乎也觉得无需解释,“The silver cord is cut and the golden bowl is broken and all that, but an old romantic like me can’t do anything about it."
"The purpose of a work of fiction is to appeal to the lingering after-effects in the reader's mind.”
《Tender is the Night》读后感(三):Fitz和他的无形羽翼
《Tender is the Night》读后感(四):They Just Don't Care
Carelessness and Indulgence are shared qualities of female characters in Fitzgerald’s works, The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, and Winter Dreams.
In The Great Gatsby, Daisy regrets that Gatsby is still alive and comes back to her after she has married Tom for his money and class. Although she confesses to Gatsby that she still loves him, she uses him as a tool to deal with unhappiness. She does not appear on Gatsby’s funeral, which is caused by her, and moves away to continue her life. Being carelessness is the best way for her to keep her status in the upper class, and this is the way she will teach her daughter to be a “pretty little fool.”
In Tender is the Night, Baby and Nicole, daughters of a Chicago magnate, work together to contribute to the decadence of Dick Diver, a promising psychiatrist. However, the sisters master different kinds of carelessness. Baby wears her purposes in her manner with money as the invincible means to achieve her goals. In her first encounter with Dick, she puts out her family background and tells Dick that she is willing to buy a doctor for her mentally disturbed sister, Nicole. Later, when Dick needs the fund for a clinic that will start a prosperous career for both Dr. Gregory and himself, Baby “generously” provides him with the large amount of money upon Dick’s request. She is delighted to see that Dick takes care of Nicole in an entangled relationship, and making a monetary compensation is her expertise. As of Nicole, she seems to have a reasonable excuse for her carelessness. Two identities exist in her: the one that stabs Dick with his love for her as an entertainment, and the one that shows her love for Dick by delicate confessions and sincere apologies. She, a feeble patient, and her husband, a prominent doctor, have an unequal relationship in terms of their properties. Thus, Nicole attempts to pull Dick down to her level, although she might be unconscious of it and blame it to her illness. Although Nicole does not anticipate that Dick still appeals to young women with merely his appearance, she succeeds in making Dick indispensable to her. Rosemary does care for the relationship she has with Dick, but Mrs. Hoyt consistently teaches her to use this relationship as a practice necessary for her growth and future career.
In Winter Dreams, everyone is attracted by Judy’s beauty, who uses her physical appearance as a weapon to control relationships. Even the way she smiles is pretentious. Ironically, she wonders why she is not happy even with her beautiful face. But a tint of despondency never shadows the dainty landscape on which she runs around laughing without caring about knocking people over.
