  ●好像是剛回國各種壓力接踵而來的時候看這一群縱情於酒色中的男女,當時又剛好念完a novel of zelda Fitzgerald 對海明威毫無好感。但之後念完Fitzgerald的beautiful and damned 才知道同時代的海明威的lost generation才有過人之處。

  Took me a long time to really finish the book, as I read intermittently. It didn't quite feel like a cool breeze as much as it was a careless calm--the reading experience. Like I could just go on and on reading, as Jake just goes on and on living. He's desperate, but he also doesn't care much. He enjoyed the fiesta, but is glad that he'll be done with it for some time. Life goes on. How much nicer it would be like otherwise--"isn't it pretty to think so?"

  我超喜欢的海明威笔下主角们,本质是同一个人格,同一种男子气概。所以这部的Barnes让我有点迷惑,因为他生理上的性无能和心理上的价值观缺失(所谓迷惘),显得这么无力弱小。

  但是再一想发现,这种价值观缺失的无欲则刚不正是海明威的主角们共通的吗?因此他们从没有失望或后悔的一类感情,像英雄一样不惧怕明天...某些方面超越了人性的弱点,聪明勇敢,而不索要任何东西;社交广泛,但拒绝保持关系...其实他们对美好的触感并没有消失,能确切感知晨露的清新或女人的性吸引力,只是不会赋予其价值或者意义。

  我只敢在睡前思考几十秒这个令人痛苦的问题,是不是生命本没有意义,人类害怕死亡但并不知道从生到死的意义究竟是什么。商业社会太擅长制造冒充的“意义”了,将人对金,权,性的欲望包装成一个个值得追求的目标。成为这种奴隶实在比“迷惘的一代”更可悲多一些,明明背负着同样的虚无,却和仓鼠一样不由自主地拼命脚踩转轮。

  如果Barnes的性无能,代表经历战争那一代美国人对生活的价值感消失而无法产生欲望,那么可以说现代越来越多虚荣的人们,是不惜猛喝药来制造性冲动,也要威风凛凛地满足别人的评价,所以我羡慕海明威的真实冷酷。

  如此我大概可以理解Barnes,也是海明威本人,为什么热衷于打猎钓鱼和围观斗牛,是文明太虚无,唯有直接享受心脏的跳动,赞美实实在在的生命。 (不过,Barnes这帮人都随便得很,别人让干嘛就干嘛,非常超脱,唯一有态度的Cohn就不是他们的“人”,是嘲笑的对象。这个情况泼了盆冷水让我清醒了一下,理论上你可以有两种完全相反的理想,但是在实践层面只有对立排他,我常忘记自己是倔强的Cohn,就做不了别的。)

  我看的这个小说实际是叫 Fiesta,我不知道为什么有两个名字,查过确认这就是 the sun also rises.

  挑这个来看纯粹是因为英语水平有限,图书馆里我能看懂的书太少,海明威一向以简洁的语言风格著称,自然选他了。

  没有去猜测过剧情是什么样的,就那么顺着剧情一点点走。

  碰巧了,特别巧。在奥地利旅游的时候正好随身揣着这本书,在维也纳回布达佩斯的火车上默默地看,突然出现了一个情节:

  quot;Well, " I said."I heard u had a wonderful trip."

  quot;Wonderful," he said."Budapest is absolutely wonderful."

  quot;How about Vienna?"

  quot;Not so good, Jake. It seemed better than it was."

  然后我就乐了,刚在奥地利呆了四天,花了两天在维也纳,一路感叹着维也纳比布达佩斯好太多,却看到这样的情节。周围坐着一半奥地利人一半匈牙利人,不知道他们看到这个的时候是怎么想的。

  还有一段。

  rett turned to Bill.

  quot;have u been in this pestilential city long?"

  quot;just got in today from Budapest."

  quot;How was Budapest?"

  quot;Wonderful. Budapest was wonderful."

  quot;ask him about Vienna."

  quot;Vienna,"said Bill," is a strange city."

  我又忍不住乐了,坚定地要把这书看完,这种应景的巧合感让我对情节有了更多好奇。

  具体的情节大家都耳熟能详,没什么好说的。

  值得感叹的一点是能在这样的环境里读到这样的书让我觉得很幸运。书里描写的欧洲市井风貌,出门就真的能看见,即使有单词不认识,直观的感受也足以弥补单词的障碍。

  书里写着,他们坐火车去西班牙,沿途平原上远近不同的红顶白墙小房子,于是火车上的我也看向窗外,真的有差不多的小房子,一样的细节,一样的风景,一样的装饰,一样的习俗,一样的服务生,一样的食物。但是,快100年过去了。

  书中的人物一九二几年在西班牙在巴黎的生活就是 吃饭晒太阳看风景看书睡觉参加嘉年华去海滩游泳去河边钓鱼喝咖啡喝酒参加派对。

  快100年过去了,我接触的欧洲人的生活依然如此。

  时间在这里并没有留下很多痕迹,也没有太大的改变。几十年如一日的日出日落,休闲,舒适,无欲无求。

  嘉年华的斗牛,奔牛,吃喝玩乐和各种服饰装饰丝毫没有过时的感觉,在80年后的今天依然如旧,甚至更显时尚,这些人是怎么过日子的。。。。。。

  斗牛去年也才刚刚被取消,怎么读这书都感受不到时间的差距,这些人这些事都像发生在身边。当然,除了战争,以及战争带给当事人的直接创伤。

  情节总的说来平平淡淡,但是非常吸引我,忍不住想起了亦舒,没什么可比性,就是忍不住想起了亦舒。言情小说,除了亦舒,别人的一本都没读过。

  都是那样淡淡的口吻,客观的态度,叙述着那些一件件发生的生活中的事。有可能我英语太烂,也许人家海明威的口吻不是淡淡的。

  我喜欢fiesta这个名字,用西班牙语或者意大利语念,特别得劲儿。

  哈哈,就像piazza这种词的发音一样得劲儿。

  《The Sun Also Rises》读后感(四):Searching for integrity in an immoral world

  小说简介

  全小说主要以法国和西班牙两地作为背景。 表述了以Brett(Lady Ashley) 身边的男人们: 他自己Jake Barnes 一个生活在法国的美国作家,Robert Cohn 一个boxing冠军,Bill Gorton 一个美国作家jake的好朋友 Mike Campbell 一个地位很高但破产的伯爵 brett 未婚夫, Romero 在西班牙认识的19岁matador 出名的斗牛士

  ook 1:

  as the opening scenes, 作者把地点定在了paris的各个cafe里面。简单描述了jake与这位大学同学robert cohn的亲密友谊,交代了robert的前女友Frances, 也引出了jake与brett那种友达以上恋人未满的关系。

  ook 2:

  故事情节开始真正发展: while jake and Bill spent five days of fishing in Burguete, Cohn is chasing Brett and Mike anywhere in Pamplona. After 5 days, they rejoined the group to drink heavily and went to enjoy the fiesta and bullfighting.在本章节 作者简介表述了人们当时antisemitic的色彩, 引出了本文中另一个勇猛的斗士 Romero

  ook 3:

  描述的时aftermath of fiesta。 各自离开pamplona 回到paris。 虽然brett一直没有和jake在一起, 但当在san sebastian 收到brett的telegram时,jake立马赶到了mardrid。 虽然brett说她决定和mike重新走到一起,但最后那朦胧模糊的结局说明了另外一种possibility:

  rett said "we could have had such a damned good time together"

  ... ... The car slowed suddenly pressing Brett against me.

  quot;yes" I said "Isnt it pretty to think so?"

  The thoughts:

  1. 地球永存

  表述的是一战后人们的生活 postwar generation "the lost generation"

  全文出现次数最多的场景就是每天在cafe,bar喝酒,alcoholics,不稳定的生活,random的浪漫主义享受生活。 一开始很接受不了。觉得他们这些作家每天的生活真的就像rotten一样。 而且全篇为中心的女主是一个玩弄感情,自己都觉得是goner的prostitute。 而男人们在西班牙的各种酒后fight也是我觉得不可理喻的。 然而我想这就是海明威想要给读者展示的他所批判的那个阶段的american value。 对比起不付钱的brett,破产的mike,jake成为了小说的中心人物, 靠自己能力挣钱工作的journalist 帮助brett付款。 就像海明威告诉他的编辑max perkins一样, 与其说他所描述的人物是lost generation 不如说他们时battered。 与其说是goner after world war one 不如说the earth abideth forever. 这也是为什么为了强调该主题, 海明威用了sun also rises 为主题 instead of fiesta。 隐晦的表述了jake barnes 我们的男主人公在富有的不真实的亡命国外者的环境下努力新生活的精神理念

  2. 凄美之爱

  That was it. Send a girl off with one man. Introduce her to another to go off with him. Now go and bring her back. And sign the wire with love. That was it all right I went in to lunch. 最后那一幕仿佛是一幅我眼前的油画 两个在特别时期的蓝颜坐在出租车上,男主抱着女主,女主柔情的而又舒适的靠在男主那可靠结实的肩膀, 一起看着远处明亮的太阳穿过周围纯净无染的小镇。

  3.斗士之志

  全书海明威用的最多笔墨就是在描述他们在hotel montana度过的fiesta和bull fight。 虽然个人不是很喜欢bloody bull killing or heavily drinking. 但通过作者细腻的描写, 每个人物都是很真实的。 他的散文文笔也是很直白表述的。 然后就是这样的写作方式, 从细节上展示出了romero与jake的斗士之志与不怕残酷现实的勇敢之气。

  《The Sun Also Rises》读后感(五):文化归属和生活循环魔咒(我还是不会起标题?)

  读的时候遇到的困难和《The White Elephant》一样,大段的对话罗列,不知道是谁说的,不得不按照交替进行的假设往回数,但是这个假设有时候是错的。虽然用词很简单,风格很平淡、冷静、客观但他写作的时候却有非常强的角色代入感。 我一直比较怕读这种太有名的作家的作品,因为有太多人解读。这次我又不小心在没读完全书的时候看了简介。当时让我很震惊的是“主人公巴纳斯在战争中受伤,成了性无能”。这让我不得不在接下来的阅读中刻意寻找这样的线索,毕竟有《The White Elephant》在先。不过真得太隐晦了,我只找到了两处模糊的“证据”。 第一处在Chapter 3,和Georgette谈起战争时: “I got hurt in the war, ” I said. 第二处在Chapter 12, 和Bill聊天时:

  “You don't work. One group claims women support you. Another group claims you're impotent.” “No, ” I said. “I just had an accident.”

  不过两次Jake都以“hurt”“accident”这样含混的词带过去了,这可能恰好证明了impotent,毕竟这种事难以启齿。不过不管怎么样,Jake因为战争受了伤,他因为这一点不能和Brett在一起。

  这部小说中的每个角色都有伤痛。有些是共同的,比如Bill说的那段很著名的话:

  quot;You know what's the trouble with you? You're an expatriate. One of the worst type. Haven't you heard that? Nobody that ever left their own country ever wrote anything worth printing. Not even in the newspapers.” He drank the coffee. “You're an expatriate. You've lost touch with the soil. You get precious. Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed by sex. You spend all your time talking, not working. You are an expatriate, see? You hang around cafés.”

  我觉得海明威似乎有很强的文化归属情结。这群不在美国的作家、艺术家和记者尽管在欧洲过着“小资”生活,也有些有名气的作品,但是他们是没有精神根基的人,没有统一的价值观。这一点从别人的评价中也可以看出来。Jake对斗牛非常有兴趣,但西班牙的旅馆老板Montoya就觉得很奇怪:

  omehow it was taken for granted that an American could not have aficion. He might simulate it or confuse it with excitement, but he could not really have it. When they saw that I had aficion, and there was no password, no set questions that could bring it out, rather it was a sort of oral spiritual examination with the questions always a little on the defensive and never apparent, there was this same embarrassed putting the hand on the shoulder, or a “Buen hombre.” But nearly always there was the actual touching. It seemed as though they wanted to touch you to make it certain.

  后来他评价斗牛士Romero时也说(原文找不到了),大意就是因为Romero在这片土地上,他才能成为最好的斗牛士。他全心全意地专注于这项事业。他也不想让Romero去见美国大使,觉得这会污染他:

  “He's such a fine boy, ” said Montoya. “He ought to stay with his own people. He shouldn't mix in that stuff.”

  在描述Romero时出现的最多的词是good-mannered,有些跟这群脏话连篇烂醉如泥的美国人完全不同的庄严和道德标准。

  海明威在这部作品里也渗透出一种对犹太人的厌恶。除了Cohn自身的行为举止让人反感之后,这里面是否有对犹太人同样四海为家、缺乏文化认同和文化根基的批判呢?

  除了环境的影响外,这部小说更具共鸣的就在于人物的迷茫感,他们也觉得每天吃喝玩乐的享乐生活不好,想要摆脱,但似乎就有一种惯性让他们的意志的努力只沦为短暂的热情,陷入自我矛盾的循环。最典型的就是Brett。下面是Brett和Jake跳舞的片段(曾经看过有人评选影视作品中最动人的舞蹈片段,包括《闻香识女人》里面的探戈,我觉得这本小说如果拍成电影,这段舞蹈必须榜上有名)

  “Come on. Let's dance, ” Brett said. We danced. It was crowded and close. “Oh, darling, ” Brett said, “I'm so miserable.” I had that feeling of going through something that has all happened before. “You were happy a minute ago.” The drummer shouted: “You can't two time—” “It's all gone.” “What's the matter? ” “I don't know. I just feel terribly.” “......” the drummer chanted. Then turned to his sticks. “Want to go? ” I had the feeling as in a nightmare of it all being something repeated, something I had been through and that now I must go through again.

  rett无法控制自己对男人的欲望(甚至不能称之为感情,我觉得这就是一种动物一样的本能)。听到过她说“I love you”的男人数不胜数,Jake只是其中之一。她总是觉得自己是个bitch,一再表示痛改前非:

  “I'm a goner. I'm mad about the Romero boy. I'm in love with him, I think.” “I wouldn't be if I were you.” “I can't help it. I'm a goner. It's tearing me all up inside.” “Don't do it.” “I can't help it. I've never been able to help anything.” “You ought to stop it.” “How can I stop it? I can't stop things. Feel that? ” Her hand was trembling. “I'm like that all through.” “You oughtn't to do it.” “I can't help it. I'm a goner now, anyway. Don't you see the difference? ” “No.” “I've got to do something. I've got to do something I really want to do. I've lost my self-respect.” “You don't have to do that.” “Oh, darling, don't be difficult. What do you think it's meant to have that damned Jew about, and Mike the way he's acted? ” “Sure.” “I can't just stay tight all the time.” “No.” “Oh, darling, please stay by me. Please stay by me and see me through this.” “Sure.” “I don't say it's right. It is right though for me. God knows, I've never felt such a bitch.”

  这段深刻的自我剖析之后的故事,就是34岁的Brett和19的Romero私奔了!她还是没能摆脱自己对男性克制不住的冲动。她始终在一个认识到错误—发誓要改错—再次犯错误的模式里循环,这让我对小说温馨的结尾也不免产生疑虑:

  “Oh, Jake, ” Brett said, “we could have had such a damned good time together.” Ahead was a mounted policeman in khaki directing traffic. He raised his baton. The car slowed suddenly pressing Brett against me. “Yes, ” I said. “Isn't it pretty to think so? ”

  在被Romero抛弃之后,Brett独身一人呆在马德里的小旅馆向昔日的情人Jake求助。Jake始终爱着Brett,不管Brett在哪个男人那里受了伤,Jake家的大门始终为她敞开。结尾营造出一种“浪子回头”Brett终于发现谁是最爱他的人啦之类的感觉,让人不得不开始感慨爱情的伟大……但我觉得不是这样,Brett再次从Jake身边出走的可能性非常大,而且Jake也知道。Jake看清了Brett陷入怎样的循环之中,他本人也心甘情愿接受这种循环,甚至说这样的相处模式他已经习以为常。我觉得这部小说不是在宣传“你不管什么样我都爱你”的让人感动的稀里糊涂的爱情,而是指出这是一种为人处世方面的弱点和缺陷。每个人都会落入类似的偏执的陷阱难以自拔,甚至不可能摆脱。

感觉还是有很多没解读出来的地方,海明威太太太深了
