When you're screwing up, and nobody is saying anything to you any more, that means they gave up.

When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want.

Most of what we learn, we learn it indirectly(or by "head fake").

You've got to get the fundamentals down because otherwise the fancy stuff isn't going to work.

That was a bit of a setback.

ut remember, the brick walls are there for a reason.

The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.

ecause the brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough. They're there to stop the other people.

Remember brick walls let us show our dedication. They are there to separate us from the people who don't really want to achieve their childhood dreams.

gt;>Decide if you're Tigger od Eeyore.

  gt;>Never lose the child-like wonder.

  gt;>Help others

  gt;>Never give up

  gt;>Show gratitude

  gt;>Don't complain; just work hard.

How to get people to help you?

gt;>You can't get there alone, and I believe in Karma.

  gt;>Tell the truth

  gt;>Be earnest

  gt;>Apologize when you screw up

  gt;>Focus on others, not yourself.

  Important Advice:

gt;>Be good at something; it makes you valuable

  gt;>Work hard.

gt;>Find the best in everybody, no matter how long it takes you to wait for them to show it

gt;>Be prepared; "luck" is where preparation meets opportunity.

gt;>Don't bail: the best gold is at the bottom of barrels of crap...

Never lose the child-like wonder

That is what it is we cannot change it. We just have to decide how we are going to respond to them. We cannot change the cards we are held, just how we played on hand.

Enable the childhood dream of others.

When you screwed it up, and nobody is saying anything to you anymore, that means that they gave up.

rick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things. Brick walls show our dedication.

If you are going to do those things that are pioneering, you are going to have those arrows on your back and you have to put up with them.

  ever lose the child-like wonder.

I take some notes from Professor Randy Pausch's Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

  1. We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.

  2. When you're screwing up and nobody's saying anthing to you anymore, that means they gave up. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care.

  3. Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

  4. The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick wall are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough.

  5. It's very important to know when you're in a pissing match. And it's very important to get out of it as quickly as possible.

  6. They're both ways of saying I don't know, but boy there's a good way and a bad way.

  7. Some brick walls are made of flesh.

  8. You obviously don't know where the bar should be, and you're only going to do them a disservice by putting it anywhere.

  9. And anybody who is out there who is a parent, if your kids want to paint their bedroom, as a favor to me let them do it. It'll be OK.

  10. Never lose the childlike wonder. It's just too important. It's what drives us.

  11. Help others.

  12. When it comes to men that are romantically interested in you, it's really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do.

  13. Never give up.

  14. How do you get people to help you? You cant't get there alone. People have to help you and I do believe in karma. I believe in paychecks. You get people to help you by telling the truth. Being earnest. I'll take an earnest person over a hip person every day, because hip is short-term. Earnest is long-term.m

  15. Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself.

  16. Remember brick walls let us show our dedication. They are there to separate us from the people who don't really want to achieve their childhood dreams.

  17. Get a feedback loop and listen to it. When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

  18. Show gratitude.

  19. Don't complain.

  20. Be good at something, it makes you valuable.

  21. Work hard.

  22. Find the best in everybody. One of the things that Jon Snoddy as I said told me is that you might have to wait a long time, sometimes years, but people will show you their good side. Just keep waiting no matter how long it takes. No one is all evil. Everybody has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out.

  23. Be prepared. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

Brick walls are there for a reason

rick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things.

I mean it’s the greatest thing of cognitive dissonance you will ever see is the fact that I am in really good shape. In fact, I am in better shape than most of you. [Randy gets on the ground and starts doing pushups] [Applause]

Is that when you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care.

ut remember, the brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.

He(Jon Snoddy)said, when you’re pissed off at somebody and you’re angry at them, you just haven’t given them enough time. Just give them a little more time and they’ll almost always impress you. And that really stuck with me. I think he’s absolutely right on that one.

They’re both ways of saying I don’t know, but boy there’s a good way and a bad way.

I say, Steve, I’m sorry but your world has crashed and we’re going to go to videotape. And he pulls out his ninja sword and says, I am dishonored! Whaaa! And just drops! [applause and laughter] And so I think it’s very telling that my very favorite moment in ten years of this high technology course was a brilliant ad lib. And then when the videotape is done and the lights come up, he’s lying there lifeless and his teammates drag him off! [laughter] It really was a fantastic moment.

If they’re standing close to each other, the world is good.

we know how you feel honey, and remember when your father was your age he was fighting the Germans.

And anybody who is out there who is a parent, if your kids want to paint their bedroom, as a favor to me let them do it.

o my next piece of advice is, you just have to decide if you’re a Tigger or and Eeyore. [shows slide with an image of Tigger and Eeyore with the phrase “Decide if you’re Tigger or Eeyore”]

And I think all young ladies should hear this. Sil said, it took me a long time but I’ve finally figured it out. When it comes to men that are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do. It’s that simple. It’s that easy. And I thought back to my bachelor days and I said, damn. [laughter]

  o. How do you get people to help you? You can’t get there alone. People have to help you and I do believe in karma. I believe in paybacks. You get people to help you by telling the truth. Being earnest. I’ll take an earnest person over a hip person every day, because hip is short term. Earnest is long term.

Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself. And I thought how do I possibly make a concrete example of that? Do we have a concrete example of focusing on somebody else over there? Could we bring it out? See, yesterday was my wife’s birthday. If there was ever a time I might be entitled to have the focus on me, it might be the last lecture. But no, I feel very badly that my wife didn’t really get a proper birthday, and I thought it would be very nice if 500 people— [a birthday cake is wheeled onto the stage] [applause]

  I will fix this.

when you do the right thing, good stuff has a way of happening.

Get a feedback loop and listen to it. Your feedback loop can be this dorky spreadsheet thing I did, or it can just be one great man who tells you what you need to hear. The hard part is the listening to it. Anybody can get chewed out. It’s the rare person who says, oh my god, you were right. As opposed to, no wait, the real reason is… We’ve all heard that. When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

  how gratitude.

  Don’t complain.

e good at something, it makes you valuable.

  Work hard.

Find the best in everybody. One of the things that Jon Snoddy as I said told me is that you might have to wait a long time, sometimes years, but people will show you their good side. Just keep waiting no matter how long it takes. No one is all evil. Everybody has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out.

And be prepared. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

o today’s talk was about my childhood dreams, enabling the dreams of others, and some lessons learned. But did you figure out the head fake? It’s not about how to achieve your dreams. It’s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you. Have you figured out the second head fake? The talk’s not for you, it’s for my kids. Thank you all, good night.

[applause; standing ovation for 90 seconds; Randy brings Jai onto the stage and they take a bow; they sit down in their seats; standing ovation continues for another minute]

  Randy
