前几天,我在这房间里
从打字机跳到钢琴,
我发现自己落入了词典的“L”部,
眼光落在了“Lanyard”(编织结)上。

把人送回昔日也远不如这么快。
那个昔日,我正在
阿迪龙达克湖边的野营地
我从没见过编织结有什么用,
假如它是戴的,也没见过人佩戴。
但这不妨碍我反反复复一股穿一股
直到为妈妈编成一方红白相间的编织结。
她给我生命还给我哺乳,
而我回报她一个编织结。
她多次在病房里看护我,
一匙一匙往我嘴里喂药,
用冷毛巾敷我的额,
然后把我领向大自然
教我走路和游泳而我回赠她一个编织结。
“给你千餐万餐,”她说,
“给你一个编织结,”我答——
“这个,”我说,“是我在野营做的编织结。”
“这个,”我现在想对她说,
但我得惭愧地坦承:当妈妈从我手里接过双色编织结的那刻,
我以一个孩子的心确信
这件我为解闷编的无用也无价值的小玩意儿
已足以把我们扯平。”

The other day as I was ricocheting slowlyoff the blue walls of this roombouncing from typewriter to pianofrom bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,I found myself in the 'L' section of the dictionarywhere my eyes fell upon the word, Lanyard. No cookie nibbled by a French novelistcould send one more suddenly into the past.A past where I sat at a workbenchat a camp by a deep Adirondack lake learning how to braid thin plastic strips into a lanyard. A gift for my mother.I had never seen anyone use a lanyard. Or wear one, if that's what you did with them. But that did not keep me from crossing strand over strand again and again until I had made a boxy, red and white lanyard for my mother. She gave me life and milk from her breasts, and I gave her a lanyard.She nursed me in many a sick room, lifted teaspoons of medicine to my lips, set cold facecloths on my foreheadthen led me out into the airy lightand taught me to walk and swim and I in turn presented her with a lanyard. 'Here are thousands of meals' she said, 'and here is clothing and a good education.' 'And here is your lanyard,' I replied,'which I made with a little help from a counselor.' 'Here is a breathing body and a beating heart, strong legs, bones and teeth and two clear eyes to read the world.' she whispered.'And here,' I said, 'is the lanyard I made at camp.''And here,' I wish to say to her now, ’is a smaller gift. Not the archaic truth, that you can never repay your mother,
ut the rueful admission that when she took the two-toned lanyard from my hands,I was as sure as a boy could be that this useless worthless thing I wove out of boredom would be enough to make us even.'

比利·科林斯(Billy Collins),1941年生于美国纽约曼哈顿,就读于圣十字学院并获英文专业学士学位,后于加州大学河滨分校取得英文专业的硕士和博士学位,长期任纽约城市大学莱曼学院高级教授。迄今共出版了十六本诗集,多次获奖。2001年至2003年任美国桂冠诗人。科林斯被《纽约时报》誉为“美国最受欢迎的诗人”。他常常会被拿来与罗伯特·弗罗斯特相比较,这大概是一个美国诗人能得到的最高赞美了。与弗罗斯特相似,他的诗坚定地不装腔作势,机智并丝毫不陷入粗鄙,善于对生活日常事件作深刻精微洞见。

飞白,全名汪飞白,1929年出生于杭州。1949年未待从浙江大学外文系毕业即参加革命工作。1980年辞军职回校,任杭州大学/浙江大学中文系教授、美国尔赛纳斯学院(Ursinus College)英文系客座教授、云南大学外国语学院教授。译著有《诗海——世界诗歌史纲》(上下卷)、《诗海游踪:中西诗比较讲稿》《古罗马诗选》《谁在俄罗斯能过好日子》《法国名家诗选》《马雅可夫斯基诗选》《勃朗宁诗选》《哈代诗选》《英国维多利亚时代诗选》(上下卷)等二十五卷,主编《世界诗库》(十卷)《汪静之文集》《世界名诗鉴赏辞典》等十九卷,参与《世界诗库》中拉丁文及英法西俄荷等十余个语种的诗翻译和评介。获十余种国家级奖项,并享有国务院的特殊津贴。
