《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》是一本由L.
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》
●Brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man.
●dear comrades for different dreams.
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》
L. Frank Baum
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》
-----"Of course I cannot understand it," he said. "If your heads were stuffed with straw, like mine, you would probably all live in the beautiful places, and then Kansas would have no people at all. It is fortunate for Kansas that you have brains." ------ Brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man. ------- "If this road goes in, it must come out," said the Scarecrow
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》

ot a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of flat country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions.
They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray(i)(炙阳和烈风也将她改变,它们夺去了她眼里的光华,抹去了她脸颊和嘴唇上的嫣红,取而代之的是死沉的灰色。)
Aunt Em had been so startled by the child's laughter that she would scream and press her hand upon her heart whenever Dorothy's merry voice reached her ears; and she still looked at the little girl with wonder that she could find anything to laugh at.(当Dorothy作为一个孤儿第一次来见她的时候,Aunt Em被Dorothy的笑声惊吓到。
As for the Scarecrow, having no brains, he walked straight ahead, and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length on the hard bricks.
You must walk. It is a long journey, through a country that is sometimes pleasant and sometimes dark and terrible.
it will take you many days. The country here is rich and pleasant, but you must pass through rough and dangerous places before you reach the end of your journey.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz begins with the Chapter 'The Cyclone', which vividly portrays Dorothy, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em and depicts a scene of the quiet country in Kansas before and under a wail of heavy whirlwind. After the Cyclone, Dorothy is carried to a special land by chance. What’s more, She was mistaken as a great sorceress to ' kill' the wizard of the East and setting the Munchkins free from bondage. Because of it, she received a reception from the Munchkins. In order to come back to her hometown, she sets foot on a special journey to the Emerald City. On the way to the Oz City, She saves a scarecrow who wants brain and secures the Tin Woodman who wants a heatrt by oiling his neck...
There were several roads nearby, but it did not take her long to find the one paved with yellow bricks. Within a short time she was walking briskly toward the Emerald City, her silver shoes tinkling merrily on the hard, yellow road-bed. The sun shone bright and the birds sang sweetly, and Dorothy did not feel nearly so bad as you might think a little girl would who had been suddenly whisked away from her own country and set down in the midst of a strange land.
he was surprised, as she walked along, to see how pretty the country was about her. There were neat fences at the sides of the road, painted a dainty blue color, and beyond them were fields of grain and vegetables in abundance.Evidently the Munchkins were good farmers and able to raise large crops.Once in a while she would pass a house, and the people came out to look at her and bow low as she went by; for everyone knew she had been the means of destroying the Wicked Witch and setting them free from bondage.

I learned that if I roared very loudly every living thing was frightened and got out of my way. Whenever I’ve met a man I’ve been awfully scared; but I just roared at him, and he has always run away as fast as he could go. If the elephants and the tigers and the bears had ever tried to fight me, I should have run myself—I’m such a coward; but just as soon as they hear me roar they all try to get away from me, and of course I let them go.
They carried the sleeping girl to a pretty spot beside the river, far enough from the poppy field to prevent her breathing any more of the poison of the flowers, and here they laid her gently on the soft grass and waited for the fresh breeze to waken her.
At first the little creatures, many though they were, could hardly stir the heavily loaded truck; but the Woodman and the Scarecrow both pushed from behind, and they got along better. Soon they rolled the Lion out of the poppy bed to the green fields, where he could breathe the sweet, fresh air again, instead of the poisonous scent of the flowers.
Dorothy——Head(Brain)——Scarecrow——A beautiful lady(Love or Heart)—— Woodman——Beast(Courage)——Lion——The Ball of Fire
【Summary】
In the Chapter 6, the strange company continues their journey to the Emerald City. They meet the cowardly Lion , the so-called ‘the King of Beasts’. It is so controversial that a strong physique and a
coward act existed in the same body. Thus, the lion request to be a member going for Oz. In the midst of the long trek, the Scarecrow comes up with several good ideas and the Woodman does everything he can to do good things. After they arrive at the Deadly Poppy Field, the poppies has a strong scent which made people fall asleep while the Scarecrow and Woodman are free of the bad effects. Due to the special situation, they have to carry the sleeping girl out of the flower bed but left the heavy sleeping lion there helplessly. Luckily, the Queen of the Field Mice asks the mice to rescue the lion in return for the life-saving grace. Therefore, every member of the team finally makes it the destination. When each one of them meets the Oz, they are asked to kill the Wicked Witch of the West in exchange for his help. Though the chances of achieving the goal is small, yet they are ready to go on a special journey against the Wicked Witch of the West(To be continued)
Even with eyes protected by the green spectacles, Dorothy and her friends were at first dazzled by the brilliancy of the wonderful City. The streets were lined with beautiful houses all built of green marble and studded everywhere with sparkling emeralds. They walked over a pavement of the same green marble, and where the blocks were joined together were rows of emeralds, set closely, and glittering in the brightness of the sun. The window panes were of green glass; even the sky above the City had a green tint, and the rays of the sun were green.

l We dare not harm this little girl,” he said to them, “for she is protected by the Power of Good, and that is greater than the Power of Evil.
l You don’t need them. You are learning something every day. A baby has brains, but it doesn’t know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get.
l All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.
l “I think you are wrong to want a heart. It makes most people unhappy. If you only knew it, you are in luck not to have a heart.
l As for the Lion, he wiped his eyes so often with the tip of his tail that it became quite wet, and he was obliged to go out into the court-yard and hold it in the sun till it dried.
【Summary】
In the Chapter12 ‘The Search for the Wicked Witch’,the special company of Dorothy, Toto and another three members embarked on their road to fight against the Wicked Witch of the West.
The witch used the telescope-like eye to find out their existence in her country. She was so annoyed that she launched four rounds of attack to put obstacles in the way. However, the Tin Woodman used his sharp axe to chop the wolves which had long legs and fierce eyes; Scarecrow stretched out his arms to twist the great flock of wild crowns; Scarecrow also came up the good ideas to prevent Dorothy, Toto and the lion being stinging by the black bees; Lion gave a great roar to frighten the poor Winkies.
Finally, she asked the winged monkeys for help. Thus, the special company didn't escape from the attack except the girl which has the kiss of the good witch. Unfortunately, The Tin Woodman was battered and dented, the Scarecrow was spilt up, the Lion was imprisoned while the girl kept working hard.
One day, the girl accidentally dashed the bucket of water over the witch and the witch, therefore, melted. And they luckily defeated the witch and rescue the companion in the end. On the way back the Emerald City, they got lost in the plain and ultimately reached the city with the assistance of the winged monkey.
On a special occasion, the special company discover the mystery of the Oz when they meet him. It was a brilliant surprise that the Oz was a pure old man with bald head and winkled face. At the beginning, all of the members went rather disappointed. However, the Oz used his sophisticated tricks to fulfill the desire of the Scarecrow,Woodman and Lion.
As for Dorothy, he thought of a special way——the hot balloon. Then they started to make it by hand and finally finished it. But the Oz successfully depart from the Emerald City and left Dorothy upset in the land.

ulge out
e.g.his head bulged out so horribly that Dorothy feared it would burst.
This is a book I read as a child, even before I saw the musical, and enjoyed a lot. However, my memory of it was overshadowed by the film. So it was a good experience to read it again as an adult.
The book is worth reading, not least because it differs in some major ways from the film adaptation. The biggest difference is that the whole dream sequence scenario, in which people from Kansas are transmogrified into figures of fantasy, is entirely absent. Dorothy wears Silver Shoes, not Ruby Slippers. And so on and so forth.
Certainly. If it wasn’t for Dorothy I should never have had brains. She lifted me from the pole in the cornfield and brought me to the Emerald City. So my good luck is all due to her, and I shall never leave her until she starts back to Kansas for good and all.(虎头蛇尾了
