《How Starbucks Saved My Life》精选点评:
《How Starbucks Saved My Life》读后感(一):厕所读物
《How Starbucks Saved My Life》读后感(二):自传的另一种组织法
《How Starbucks Saved My Life》读后感(三):真實故事.
《How Starbucks Saved My Life》读后感(四):品牌传奇又一章
《How Starbucks Saved My Life》读后感(五):How Starbucks affects my life
In America, everyone knows Starbucks and everyone can say the name of a certain coffee they mostly like. Starbucks just like a neighborhood store to people and everyone likes the atmosphere here. However, how about being a worker in Starbucks after being a creative director of J. Walter Thompson Company? If you can choose, which one will you prefer?
Michael Gates Gill, a high-flying businessman of JWP, the writer of the book, who is forced to work in Starbucks after losing job and family. He wrote down his difficult, inspirational, moving story about working in Starbucks in the book, called How Starbucks Saved My Life. This is a real story and the emotion the writer expresses in the book can strike a chord in our mind. It can teach us how to see ourselves and how to improve ourselves after being confronted the big descent in our life.
Definitely, Michael is a poor guy when I read the beginning of the book. He was fired by the company that he had donated himself to working for 25 years. During the 25 years, he never declined a task the higher level asked him to do, even at Christmas Day. What’s worse, he fell in love with a woman who encountered in a yoga club and had a baby. His wife can’t stand it and divorced with him. His four children understood it in a grown-up way, but hurt and angry too. He ruined his family and his life, in person. He lost everything overnight in his 64. All the changing happened when he met a young African-American woman, Crystal, in a Starbucks store. Crystal gave him an ordinary job in Starbucks that changed his extraordinary life.
In the book, from the experience Michael worked in Starbucks, something makes me impressed is the respect among the Starbucks partners. In Starbucks, nobody ever ordered anyone to do anything. It was always:“Would you do me a favor?” or something similar. The high level, Crystal, was always enthusiastic at every subordinate in Starbucks. This makes Michael surprised because he had never served anything to any subordinate in his entire corporate life when he was in JWT. But in Starbucks, both the partners and the guests seemed to agree tacitly that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity. The guests will chat with the partners in Starbucks casually and they even ask Michael’s working situation. No one will care about your background, education, age and race, and everyone is equal in Starbucks. Furthermore, every time Michael made progress in work he will be recognized by other partners. In Starbucks, everyone is cheerful for your progress sincerely and they are never mean in praising others. You can express your affection to anyone freely in no fear that you will be laughed at.
In this book, there is another story that appeals to me. It was a night that Michael needed to close the door with Kester and Charlie. But when there came to the closing time of 12:30, all the guests had gone but one. Michael walked up to that guy’s table to ask him to leave again and again. That guy just ignored him and abused him. Unexpectedly, at the end, the rude guy took out a knife to threaten him. At this moment, Kester noticed the danger signals. He managed to let Michael pull away and watched that guy left without a word. After that, Michael reflected on himself why he had got so pissed off at that guy. Maybe because that guy hadn’t respected him. Michael realized that he had still not really internalized for himself the respect and the job he did. So he would do the things out of judgment. So do us. Sometimes, we will get angry when people speak ill of us. But think in an opposite way, if we respect ourselves, are there any reasons that others will not respect us? We want others respect us, we need to respect ourselves firstly.
Michael’s daughter, Elizabeth, who is a beautiful and cleaver girl. She was mentioned in this book a little. He said she had always loved to work and be active in the world. Even a small job, she had approached her jobs with true enthusiasm. Michael profited by her example. Why do not we set her as an example? Just like a sentence in the book,“Work is dignity”. We should treat work as the calling of our mind. Try our best to do every job, no matter how small and trivial it is. We will get what we deserve at the end.
“Life was life——with all its bizarre twists and turns.” No matter how difficult your life is now. Chill up. Less past, more future. Give up spending so much time thinking about the past and what we lost. It is going to be a big challenge just to keep up with the present.
This is a book for someone who needs to broaden his horizon. Maybe someday, you can sit down with a cup of coffee, and you will profit much from this book, How Starbucks Saved My Life.
