“ They shared the weight of memory.

They took up what others could no longer bear.

Often, they carried each other, the wounded or weak.

They carried infections.

They carried chess sets, basketballs, Vietnamese-English dictionaries, insignia of rank, Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts, plastic cards imprinted with the Code of Conduct.

They carried diseases.

They carried the land itself—Vietnam, the place, the soil—a powdery orange-red dust that covered their boots and fatigues and faces.

They carried the sky. ”

写得太牛逼了。

有些逝去的情感刻在文字里,在你阅读的时候喷薄而出,咄咄逼人(不是这么用的)且声势浩大。

我猜这就是这本书的意义、对战争进行描写刻画的意义。

它让你在十年百年后,透过白纸黑字和所谓“苍白”的描写,以别样的方式感受到当年的冲突与流血、信仰与现实,还有人们内心深处的迷茫与挣扎、堕落与渴望。

哦对了,关于那个贯穿始终、时不时被提到的,那个士兵心水的女生,的提及也是一绝,我更觉得这是一种意象,代表对于和平时代的美好向往(尤其是对于身处人间炼狱、每天只看到生灵涂炭景象的士兵们来说

  《The Things They Carried》读后感(二):What the hell people carry all these things for?蜗牛背着那重重的壳呀,一步一步往哪爬?

  

先放下反战恢宏主题不表,Tim O’Brien的写作功力让人惊讶,最简单平实的文字,能让主角带上go-pro,把一帧帧画面,长焦广角,一镜到底,4k高清呈现在读者眼前,着实是一个被写字耽误了的好导演; 开头第一段,一个前线士兵Jimmy Cross在读疑似“女友”Martha的来信,他的读信方式初看起来有一点猥琐而filthy,“he would sometimes taste the envelop flaps,knowing her tongue had been there”, 这个女友对Jimmy来说忽远忽近,欲拒还迎,似乎唾手可得却又触不可及;这虚无的关系虽如轻烟飘渺,却是Jimmy躺在僵硬战壕中唯一想用尽全身力气拥入怀中紧紧抱住不愿放开分毫的寄托。几句轻描淡写,就把蜷缩在黑暗角落里的中尉置于聚光灯下,读者仿如置身现场,一切历历在目,真实可碰。

  很少能有小说,在第一章,就叫人读得喘不过气来。

  我对战争题材一向持规避态度,我受不了那种血腥、残忍、肮脏,我厌恶战争,厌恶这种野蛮而暴虐的争端解决方式,我很少看战争题材的电影,也不爱读战争小说。

  但《The Things They Carried》第一句就吸引了我。中尉吉米一直带着他所暗恋的女孩,家乡新泽西州塞巴斯蒂安山大学三年级学生玛莎的信。他希望这些信能是情书,但可惜它们只是朋友间的普通书信。尽管如此,他还是把信小心翼翼的折好,放进塑料袋,藏在行军囊的最下面。一天的行军完毕将近黄昏时,他挖好战壕,用行军壶里的水洗净手,便会把信取出来,用指尖轻轻捏住,借着最后一小时的天光,思念玛莎。Tim O’Brien的语言有一种游离于战争大环境之外的迷蒙感,那些亲昵而又琐屑的小细节,让人常常有一种云深不知身何处的错觉。比如玛莎随信寄给中尉吉米一颗在涨潮时海岸交接处捡到的小卵石作为平安符,因为那里“一切交汇而又分离”;吉米在越南令人烦躁的大热天里会把这颗小卵石唅在嘴里,用舌头翻来翻去,感受海的咸度与湿度。吉米想专注于眼前的战争,却无能为力的做着虚无飘渺的白日梦,他幻想自己光着脚,和玛莎一起走在新泽西的海岸线上,毫无负担。“他会感到自己升起来。阳光与海潮,还有温柔的风,还有爱与轻盈。”

  中尉吉米只是战争的一个侧面。与吉米飘渺疏离的白日梦相穿插的,是越南战场上美军前线步兵装备的详尽描述——精确到盎司。他们依据战争需要负重,他们根据职位和地形负重,他们根据任务负重,他们根据迷信负重。他们背着纸、笔、别针、信号弹、电线、剃刀片、烟草、蜡烛、指甲刀……他们背着越南这片土地,背着疲惫,他们背着越南的天空,还有盖满了他们皮靴和面孔的红土,潮湿、雨季、真菌、腐败的味道。背上了,便再也拿不下来。

  如此安排的小说,跳跃性非常大,如同散文;但不管哪一章,不管是描述战前,战争中,还是战后,内容都离不开“负重”这个大主题。情感最为强烈的一章是Tim O’Brien描述他接到入伍诏书试图逃离去加拿大的情形。21岁的青年,刚刚从大学毕业,在社会反战大潮中模糊的憎恨着战争,还以为有大把的青春可以挥霍,还以为战争政治都与自己无关,一纸诏书却让他愤怒,颤栗,无比的害怕死亡。精神的重迫终于在一个早晨把他压垮,他“感到胸口里什么东西破裂了”,是“物理的破裂——那种破开—渗漏—碎裂的过程”。“我胸口里还有那种渗漏的感觉,一种温暖而又珍贵的东西流了出来……很长时间我只能专注于让自己不要垮掉。”这样的句子,加之他所描述的屠宰场,血雾,腥臭,读来直叫人触目惊心。但这还不是情感最强烈的端口。他在达到美加边境后,在船上抉择自己是否要跳船游到加拿大逃避兵役,平静的湖面,舒缓的风,安静的对岸树丛,对比着他胸中翻江倒海的情绪,家乡的小镇、亲朋、同学,大体育场里赛场上的灯光,热狗与爆米花的香气,人声,战争电影,枪崩掉的手指头,眼睛被打成星状黑洞死在地上的越南民兵……还有船上钓鱼的老头,动也不动,不回头,不看,说——“不咬钩啊。”

  书中的Tim O’Brien放声大哭。

  那晚上读书的我,关上灯,把书放下,拉起被子,蒙住头,在黑暗中止不住的抖,抽泣,心里像被割了一万刀,凉飕飕的,疼,疼。

  不用再说关于战争罪恶的话,不用总结,你没法总结。战争有太多细节,战争有太大的力量,战争可以用一万种方式摧毁一万种文明,战争是偏激的,战争碾碎人性,战争让人死,战争是地狱。但同时,战争又是美丽的。Tim O’Brien写道:“战争还是神秘的可怕的,它是历险勇气发现神圣怜悯绝望渴望,还有爱。”“你盯着蜿蜒刺破夜空的信号弹,如同灿烂的彩带。你俯身埋伏时一轮摄人心魄的冷月升起在夜晚的稻田之上。你惊叹部队移动时的对称性,声音、形状还有比例的完美搭配,战船上呼啸射出的一排整齐炮火,照明弹,白磷弹,胶油弹发出纯粹的艳橙光芒,火箭弹的红色荧光。确切的说,这并不是漂亮。这是震撼,你目不暇接。你恨它,是的,但你的眼睛不恨。”

  面对这样的句子,我终于第一次明白了战争逼人的魅力魔力,第一次通过文字感受到死与生之间的微薄界限。“总结战争就如同总结和平。似乎一切都是真实的,似乎什么都不真实。在核心,也许,战争只是死亡的另一个名字,然而任何一个战士都会告诉你,如果他说的是事实,濒临死亡同时带来的是对生命的无限接近……在几近死亡之时你会更加强烈的体会自己活着。”我曾经一味强调战争的丑恶,但战争如果没有与之而来的自豪与荣誉,没有表面的美好与震撼,哪里来得内核的腐朽与彻底的丑陋!

  Tim O’Brien不能总结战争,我也不能总结这本书。太多的影像,太多的片段,太多的情绪。我仿佛也看见阳光照到Curt Lemon的脸上,他在绿叶和光线的包围中升上了天;我仿佛也躺在污水横流的粪地沼泽上,枪火在响,暴雨倾盆而下,地面裂开,污泥飞溅,人不可遏制的向下沉,向下沉。无比的寂静中,那些山脉、树木、河流仿佛就在我眼前看不到头的黑暗里一遍又一遍无声的呼喊——

  “到最后,当然,一个真实的战争故事从来都不是关于战争的。它关于阳光。它关于黎明如何铺展到河流之上,而此时你正想办法过河,必须开进对面的山脉去做你害怕做的事。它关于爱和回忆。它关于悲伤。它关于那对从未回信的姐妹和从不听你说话的人。”

  《The Things They Carried》读后感(四):Things They Carried, Chapter Church Reflection - College Writing (89/100)

  The chapter Church in The Things They Carried tells a story about an afternoon when the group comes across an almost abandoned pagoda, where there are a pair of monks living in a tar paper shack. During those days when the soldiers live there, the monks show their respect by making a washing motion with their hands. They also showtheir kindness by providing food to them and help them clean their equipments. Amongst the soldiers, the monks liked Henry Dobbins most and called him “good soldier Jesus”. The monks’ kindness woke up the philanthropic part of Dobbins, and he tells Kiowa that he wants to be benevolent—simply nice to people instead of preaching doctrines. Unlike Dobbins, Kiowa, a faithful Christian who carries New Treatment everywhere with him, feels that church is deep in his life and he likes the serenity and peace of being in a church. At last, both Dobbins and Kiowa agree that conducting military actions in such a solemn and serene place is wrong.Dobbins gives the monks the washing motion back to show his friendliness to the monks.

  I think the whole chaptershows the violence of the war byproviding contrast: the contrast between the war and the church, the contrast between the soldiers and the monks, and the contrast between belief and reality.For example, at the beginning of this story, O’ Brien depicts the environment of where the monks live as a tar paper shack, having a small garden and some broken shrines. Even though it is simple the environment reveals a kind of quietness and isolation. After this description, the writer mentions digging foxholes, which breaks the harmony of the scene and reminds the readers of the violent and cruel facts of war. The peace in this pagoda makes the violence of the war even more annoying and exhausting.Although the group is breaking the land of the yard, the monks stillappear friendly:make the washing motion to show respect. This reveals the fact that there are many innocent people during that time who are nice and do not deserve the trauma of the war. O’Brien also shows the innocence of those monks by using certain words. For instance they “giggled” and “smiled happily” when the soldiers are showering. The old monk even bows to Jimmy Cross when he is asking Jimmy to sit on a cane chair. These descriptionsshow the harmonious and sweet scenes of the monks, which is a great contrast of what the soldiers do outside of the church-like pagoda. Dobbins and Kiowa’s conversation reveal that war makes them to do things they do not desire to do. Both of them are also loving people like those monks, who want to help other and be nice to people. But because they are soldiers they are trapped by their situation.Both Dobbins and Kiowa think it is wrong to operate in the church and at the end of this story Dobbins gives those monks his favorite things: a can of peaches, and a chocolate bar to show his friendliness and respect. However, this does not help to cover the truth that they break the serenity and solemnity of this sacred place and we can comprehend thisas the US army destroys the peace of Vietnam.

  The structure of this story is also interesting. O’Brien puts sentences that give peaceful scenes within text. For example during the conversation between Dobbins and Kiowa,after a series of exchanged dialoguehe goes back to describing the two monks who help Dobbins clean his machine gun. This also helps show the kindness of the monks, therefore contrasting the harshness of the war.

  y writing this chapter, O’Brien provides his readers with the warm and sweet side of war, which makes the whole story more vibrant and believable. It also gives the readers a break from the gut wrenchingstories of the war.
